Centre volleyball splits opening matches

The Centre volleyball team opened its 2014 season with tournament play in New York City with a pair of games at New York University. After dropping the first match of the year to North Central (Ill.) in straight sets, the Colonels rebounded to defeat Rowan, also in straight sets.

Against North Central, the first set was a back-and-forth contest with several lead changes. The Cardinals took the lead for good at 20-19 and held on for a 25-22 win. North Central used late runs in each of the next two sets to prevail by a score of 25-18 in the second set and 25-20 in the third set.

Beth Cecil (Bardstown, Ky.) led the Colonels with 12 kills, followed by Abbigale Jacobi with seven. Elizabeth Janszen (Cincinnati, Ohio) led Centre with 16 assists and ten digs. Erin McGrath (Louisville, Ky.) finished with nine digs, while Shelby Foote (Prospect, Ky.) recorded four assists.

In the second match against Rowan, Centre broke a 10-10 tie in the first set with five consecutive points on the way to a 25-21 win. The second set was a more comfortable victory for the Colonels as they scored the first four points and never looked back, winning 25-18. In the third set, Centre survived one set point at 24-23 to win a 31-29 thriller.

Beth Cecil once again led Centre in kills with 15. Elizabeth Janszen recorded 31 of the team's 33 assists against the Owls, while Beth Cecil, Erin McGrath and Morgan Babey (LaGrange, Ky.) all posted double figures in digs against Rowan.

Centre will play two more matches on Aug. 30 in the tournament at New York University, one against Hunter and another game against an opponent yet to be announced.
