Centre falls to No. 4 Emory and Hanover in volleyball action

One day after splitting a pair of matches to open the season, the Centre College volleyball team fell 3-0 to No. 4 Emory University and then lost 3-2 to Hanover College on day two of the Maryville College Tournament Saturday, Sept. 1 in Maryville, Tenn.

The Colonels (1-3) fell 25-21, 25-15 and 25-21 to the fourth ranked team in the country to open day two of the tournament.

Sophomore Suzanne Asbury (Louisville, Ky.) led the team with 10 kills and two blocks. Junior Lydia Prevost (Knoxville, Tenn.) had five kills. Junior Kary Stivers (Louisville, Ky.) notched 15 assists and senior Jenna Foushee (Louisville, Ky.) finished with 15 digs.

Things looked better in match two of the day as Centre won the first two games 25-17 and 26-24, but Hanover rallied to win two tightly contested games 25-23 and 29-27 to force a game five. The Panthers went on to win game five 15-12 and the match 3-2.

Asbury, junior Catherine Janszen (Cincinnati, Ohio) and sophomore Celia Moser (Troy, Ohio) each finished in double figures with kills. Asbury had 12 kills and 11 blocks. Janszen posted 17 digs and 10 kills, while Moster recorded 12 kills and five blocks. Freshman Paige Poggemeier (St. Charles, Mo.) also added 11 digs and two service aces.

Centre will travel to Terre Haute, Ind. Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 8-9 to take part in the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology Tournament. The Colonels will open play Saturday against Millikin College at 1 p.m. and Rose-Hulman at 3 p.m.
