Volleyball defeats Maryville, falls to W&L to open season

The Centre College volleyball team opened its 2012 campaign with a 3-2 win over Maryville College and a 3-1 loss to Washington & Lee University on the first day of the Maryville College Tournament Friday, Aug. 31 in Maryville, Tenn.

The Colonels split the first two games. After a 25-23 win, Centre fell 25-19 in game two. A 25-18 win in game three and a 25-18 loss in game four forced a deciding game five, in which the Colonels out-lasted the Scots 17-15 for the 3-2 victory.

Junior Catherine Janszen (Cincinnati, Ohio) led the way with 18 digs and 11 kills. Junior Kim Lownds (Evergreen, Colo.) had 10 kills. Junior Kary Stivers(Louisville, Ky.) tallied 26 assists and two service aces. Senior Jenna Foushee (Louisville, Ky.) posted 19 digs and sophomore Suzanne Asbury (Louisville, Ky.) added nine kills and eight blocks.

Centre carried the momentum from its win over Maryville into a 25-21 win in game one against Washington & Lee. Game two was a hard fought battle but the Generals came out on top 28-26. Washington & Lee then won game three 25-22 and game four 25-18 for the 3-1 win.

Lownds posted 10 kills. Asbury notches eight kills and two blocks. Foushee had 18 digs and freshman Elizabeth Janszen (Cincinnati, Ohio) finished with 17 assists and three kills.

The Colonels (1-1) will return to action Saturday, Sept. 1 for day two of the tournament. Match one will be against Emory at 10 a.m. and match two against Hanover at 12:30 p.m. in Maryville, Tenn.
