Centre women pick up 2-0 NCAA Tournament win over Agnes Scott on two Kersey goals

The Centre women's soccer team picked up its first NCAA Tournament win, defeating Agnes Scott 2-0 on a pair of goals by Mary Taylor Kersey in a first round game Saturday in Danville, Ky.

Playing an NCAA Tournament game at home for the first time, the Colonels were able to create several scoring chances and close calls early as they outshot Agnes Scott 17-2 in the first half. It was in the 27th minute when Centre finally broke through when Kersey (Winchester, Ky.) was able score off a rebound when Scotties goalkeeper Ashley Watts came up injured on the play. Just one minute later, Kersey found the net again off an assist from Anne Mitchell (Fayetteville, Ark.).

Those two goals would be more than enough as the Centre defense kept Agnes Scott from ever seriously threatening in posting its 15th shutout of the year. Overall, Centre went on to take 24 shots to the Scotties' four while holding a 7-2 edge in corners. Megan Foley (Louisville, Ky.) was credited with the win in net for the Colonels while Holly Hilton (New Palestine, Ind.) made the team's only save. Watts finished with seven saves for Agnes Scott while Sydney Holstad had five.

Centre moves to 20-1 on the season with the result and picks up its first NCAA Tournament victory. With the win, Colonels will be moving on to the second round for the second year in a row after advancing on penalty kicks in last year's first round.

Agnes Scott concludes its season at 9-10-2.
