The Centre women's soccer team scored early and often in posting a 7-0 victory over Marietta in the final game of the Centre Showcase on Saturday in Danville, Ky.
In all, six Colonels scored and freshman Alex Combs (Danville, Ky.) added four assists and a goal in her first collegiate start as Centre moved to 2-0 on the season.
Mary Taylor Kersey (Winchester, Ky.) was the only Centre player to score two goals and was the first to score as she followed up a rebounded shot just five minutes into the game. Later, Hannah Kroskie (Fort Wayne, Ind.) scored on a cross from Combs to give Centre a 2-0 lead going into halftime.
Combs scored her first collegiate goal five minutes into the second half, then helped Centre pull away by assisting on goals by Kersey, Morgan Collins (Utica, Mich.) and Katie Stevenson (Flat Rock, N.C.) over a seven minute stretch. Annastasia Hicks (Cynthiana, Ky.) later capped the scoring for the Colonels, getting a goal off an assist from Meagan Redding (Lafayette, Ind.) in the 72nd minute.
Centre controlled the game throughout, outshooting the Pioneers 19-2 and holding a 13-0 edge in corners. Marietta's Kaitlyn Pearse made six saves in goal while Centre's Megan Foley (Louisville, Ky.) and Holly Hilton (New Palestine, Ind.) combined for the shutout with Foley making two saves.
After coming out of the Centre Showcase 2-0, the Colonels now face a stretch of six straight road games, beginning with a trip to No. 17 Case Western Reserve on Saturday, Sept. 8. Centre's next home game will be Sept. 25 against Spalding.
