The Centre women's soccer team won in dramatic fashion to open its season, scoring twice in the closing minutes to pull out a 2-1 win over John Carroll in the Centre Showcase on Saturday in Danville, Ky.
Though the Colonels spent the majority of the game in John Carroll's zone and created several chances, they fell behind 1-0 on a goal by Carroll's Kelly Kertis just before the half. That score held up until the 80th minute when Centre's Liz Miller (Nicholasville, Ky.) scored off a deflection by John Carroll goalkeeper Haley McDonald.
With the clock running down, Centre's Morgan Collins (Utica, Mich.) scored on another deflected ball, chipping it over McDonald's head for the game winner.
The Colonels outshot John Carroll 16-6 for the game and 10-3 in the second half. McDonald made six saves in the loss for John Carroll while Megan Foley (Louisville, Ky.) and Holly Hilton (New Palestine, Ind.) each worked a half in goal for Centre.
Both teams will be back in action in the Centre Showcase again Saturday as John Caroll (0-1) takes on Transylvania at 5:30 and Centre (1-0) meets Marietta at 7:30. Transylvania was a 3-0 winner over Marietta in Friday's first game.
