The Centre women's lacrosse team dominated a 16 minute stretch in the first half to pull away for a 20-9 victory over Missouri Baptist on Tuesday in Danville, Ky.
The Colonels fell behind 3-2 in the opening minutes, but a goal by Emily Madden (Louisville, Ky.) at the 25 minute mark started a run of eight straight goals for Centre. Daniell Pfyl, who led Missouri Baptist with four goals, scored to break the streak, only to see Centre answer with another six in a row. When Audrey Powers (Chattanooga, Tenn.) scored with nine minutes left in the half, a 2-1 deficit for Centre had turned into a 15-3 lead.
Meg Hawthorne (Cary, N.C.) led the way for Centre with five goals and four assists while Madden and Jacqueline Anderson (Louisville, Ky.) each scored four goals. Sarah Mastey (Chattanooga, Tenn.) scored three goals and Katy Cremer (Hudson, Ohio) scored twice with Powers and Anne Carol Preuss (Louisville, Ky.) each scoring single goals.
Centre took a 16-4 lead to halftime, and Missouri Baptist made a run of its own, cutting the margin to 16-8 after scoring the first four goals of the second half. The Colonels put the game away by outscoring the Spartans 4-1 over the final 13 minutes.
Allison Eisner (Louisville, Ky.) made six saves in goal for Centre, while Casi Wicks had 13 stops for Missouri Baptist. Centre outshot the Spartans 39-18 and held a 20-11 advantage in draw controls.
Centre improves to 4-1 on the season while Missouri Baptist falls to 5-1 after receiving its first loss. The Colonels are back in action on Thursday when they host Ohio Wesleyan at 6 p.m.
