The Centre women's lacrosse team opened its season with a win, pulling away for a 21-9 win over Birmingham-Southern in a Southern Athletic Association game Saturday in Birmingham, Ala.
The Colonels were led by a balanced attack with seven players scoring goals and five players scoring at least three. Jacqueline Anderson (Louisville, Ky.), Emily Madden (Louisville, Ky.), Sarah Mastey (Chattanooga, Tenn.) and Audrey Powers (Chattanooga, Tenn.) led the way for Centre with four goals each. Meg Hawthorne (Cary, N.C.) added three goals, with Ellen Resinger (Louisville, Ky.) and Katy Cremer (Hudson, Ohio) scoring a goal each.
Centre took an early lead when Madden and Anderson scored back to back goals two minutes into the game. Southern answered with a score of its own, but Centre responded with three more to go up 5-1 at the 20 minute mark. The Panthers stayed close as the teams alternated goals over the next five minutes, but late in the half, Centre went on a stretch of eight straight goals to pull away.
Centre took a 15-6 lead to halftime and went on to build on it in the second half. The Colonels took their biggest lead when a run of three straight goals put them up 20-8 with 10 minutes to play.
Centre outshot Birmingham-Southern 37-21, putting 28 of those on goal to the Panthers' 14. Centre also converted on seven of 11 free position shots and held a 24-17 edge in ground balls. Each team turned the ball over 19 times.
The Colonels open the year 1-0 overall and 1-0 in SAA play. Birmingham-Southern falls to 1-1 overall and in the conference. The Colonels arre back in action again next Saturday when they travel to Wooster.
