Women advance to SCAC Championship with 67-56 win over Rhodes

One week after falling to Rhodes at home in the regular season finale for both teams, the Centre College women's basketball team got revenge with a 67-56 win Saturday, Feb. 25 in Birmingham, Ala.  to advance to the SCAC Tournament Championship game.

Five different players scored as the Colonels raced out to a 15-3 just over six minutes into the game.

With 6:57 left in the opening period, Rhodes' Sarah Womack hit a three-pointer to cut the lead to nine points (29-20). 

The rest of the half was all Centre as the Colonels scored 15 of the final 17 points in the half to take a 44-22 lead at the break.

Centre continued to control the game in the second half, but a 15-5 run by the Lynx cut the lead to 55-44. Rhodes was unable to get any closer as the Colonels closed out the game for the 11-point victory and a birth in the tournament championship game.

Nine different players scored for Centre led by senior guard Maggie Prewitt's (Mt. Sterling, Ky.) 19 points and seven rebounds. Senior forward Lauren Huter (Louisville, Ky.) added a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds and sophomore forward Paige Baechle (Gallatin, Tenn.) finished with five points and 10 rebounds.

Sharwil Bell led the Lynx with 16 points and six rebounds. Womack and Sarah Johnson also finished in double figures with 10 points apiece. Johnson also added nine rebounds in the defeat.

Centre will play Millsaps College Sunday, Feb. 26 in the tournament championship game. Tip-off is set for 2:30 p.m. CST in Birmingham, Ala.
