Centre women advance to SCAC semis with 65-46 win over Hendrix
The Centre women's basketball team advanced to the semifinals of the SCAC Tournament with a 65-46 victory over Hendrix on Friday in Birmingham, Ala.
Senior point guard Maggie Prewitt (Mount Sterling, Ky.) led the way for Centre with 18 points, seven rebounds and nine assists while Bridget Winstead (Franklin, Tenn.) chipped in 12 points on 4-of-7 shooting from 3-point range.
The Colonels led the entire way after Winstead buried a 3-pointer on the team's first possession, but it was just before the half when Centre began to pull away. Hanging on to a 29-26 lead at the 2:35 mark, Centre scored the final nine points of the period to take a 38-26 lead to the break.
After Avery Roller of Hendrix made a jumper to open the second half, the Colonels then responded with a 10-1 run that would put them up 48-29 and have them operating with a comfortable margin the rest of the way. Going back to the run before halftime, Centre had outscored Hendrix 19-3 over a stretch of 8:30 while holding the Warriors to 1-of-11 shooting and forcing four turnovers.
Centre went on to build its lead to as many as 26 when Winstead connected again from outside to go up 63-37 with 5:26 to play.
The Colonels shot 43.6 percent (24-of-55) overall and 46.7 percent (7-of-15) from 3-point range while holding Hendrix to 26.8 percent (15-of-56) overall and 25 percent (4-of-16) from outside. Centre also held a 48-31 rebounding advantage.
Roller was the only player in double figures for Hendrix, leading the team with 15 points. Paige Baechle (Gallatin, Tenn.) scored nine points with a team-high nine rebounds for Centre while Jane Goatley (Springfield, Ky.) added eight points.
With the win, Centre moves to 22-3 on the season and advances to meet Rhodes in a semifinal at 6 p.m. Saturday. Centre and Rhodes have split a pair of regular season matchups this season with the Colonels winning 62-57 on Dec. 4 and Rhodes winning 58-56 on Feb. 19.
