Softball season ends with sweep by Rhodes
The Centre softball team saw its season come to an end Sunday with 6-3 and 10-3 losses to Rhodes in a doubleheader at Millenium Park.
The teams came into the series with identical records in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play and a bid to the conference tournament on the line. After splitting Saturday's games, Sunday's sweep pushed Rhodes' conference record to 8-8 while Centre falls to 6-10. The Colonels finish the year at 15-22 overall while Rhodes improves to 16-15-1 heading into the SCAC Tournament on Friday.
Both games played out similarly with Centre falling behind early, then rallying to tie the score at 3-3 before Rhodes pulled away late.
In game one, a 2-run double got Rhodes out to a 2-0 second inning lead before Centre got one run back on an error in the third inning. Rhodes scored on a wild pitch in the fifth inning to go up 3-1, but Centre came back to tie the game in the bottom half of the inning on a Chelsea Collard (Louisivlle, Ky.) RBI double into the right field corner and a run-scoring single by Emily Meador (Scottsville, Ky.).
As soon as the Colonels tied the score, however, Rhodes scored another run on an error in the top of the sixth, then added insurance with a 2-run home run by Jessica Brown in the seventh.
Meador went the distance for Centre in the first game, striking out four while allowing five earned runs. Chelsea Peters took the win for Rhodes, scattering six hits over 5.2 innings while striking out five and allowing three unearned runs.
Forrest Skelton came on to take the save for the Lynx, then kept that momentum going into the second game. In game two, Skelton went all seven innings, striking out three, allowing six hits and one earned run while helping her own cause with a 4-4 day and five RBIs at the plate.
Rhodes again scored first in the second game with a run in the top of the first inning, though Centre answered in the bottom half on an RBI double by Meador. Rhodes went up 3-1 on a 2-run single by Skelton in the third, but again Centre came back to tie when Hannah Simpson (Lexington, Ky.) and Katie Martello (Nicholasville, Ky.) scored on an error.
Though the Colonels had tied the game, Rhodes went back up 5-2 with a pair of RBI singles in the fifth inning, then strung together five hits to put up four more runs in the sixth. A Makenzie Martin home run in the seventh capped the scoring at 10-3.
