Softball splits doubleheader with Mount St. Joseph
The Centre College softball team fell 7-3 in the opener, but rebounded to win 8-0 in five innings in game two of a doubleheader against the College of Mount St. Joseph Wednesday, April 18 at Millennium Park in Danville, Ky.
In game one, the Colonels allowed two first inning runs, but scored one in the bottom of the inning when freshman Shawnee Shuler (Knoxville, Tenn.) drove in sophomore Ashley Christian (Kingsport, Tenn.) on a single to center field.
The Lions (6-25) plated four runs in the top of the third to extend their lead to 6-1.
The Colonels were unable to get any closer and fell 7-3 after allowing a seventh inning run.
Junior Emily Meador (Scottsville, Ky.) took the loss after allowing seven runs - five earned - on 13 hits in a complete-game effort. She walked one and struck out six.
Christian, Simpson and sophomore Katie Martello (Nicholasville, Ky.) had two hits apiece with Christian scoring a pair of runs.
Centre bounced back in game two scoring a pair of unearned runs in the first inning to go in front 2-0.
In the third, the Colonels added on with four runs on four run-scoring singles to take a 6-0 lead.
Sena doubled a run home to make it 7-0 in the fifth and the eighth run scored courtesy of a Mount St. Joseph error to end the game in only five innings.
Junior pitcher Emily Landherr (Louisville, Ky.) earned the complete game shutout victory allowing only two hits with one walk and two strikeouts.
Eight different players registered a hit with Christian leading the way with three hits in four at-bats.
Centre, now 14-19 overall, will next host Rhodes College in a conference doubleheader Saturday, April 21. Game time is set for 1 p.m. at Millennium Park in Danville, Ky.
