Centre softball sweeps doubleheader from Sewanee

The Centre College softball team had little trouble in sweeping a pair of games from Sewanee-University of the South winning 27-9 and 12-3 Saturday, April 14 in Sewanee, Tenn.

The Colonels scored eight in the first and didn't look back in game one. Needing only five innings to win by run rule, Centre scored five in the second, two in the third, seven in the fourth and five in the fifth for the 18-run victory.

Junior pitcher Emily Meador (Scottsville, Ky.) earned the win. She allowed nine runs - only three earned - on eight hits over 4.2 innings.

Ten different players recorded at least one hit with six players finishing with multiple hits. The Colonels tallied nine doubles, a triple and four home runs in the game.

Senior Regina Sena (Moss Beach, Calif.) and junior Chelsea Collard (Louisville, Ky.) finished with four hits each. Sena had a pair of home runs and a pair of doubles, scored four runs and drove in six. Collard had three doubles, scored five runs and drove in two more.

Meador, sophomore Ashley Christian (Kingsport, Tenn.) and freshman Shawnee Shuler (Knoxville, Tenn.) had three hits apiece and three rbis each. Sophomore Katie Martello (Nicholasville, Ky.) also drove in three runs and had two hits.

Centre came right back in game two and jumped out to a 7-0 lead after two at-bats. The Tigers scored three in the second only to see the Colonels add three more in the fifth for the second run-rule win of the day.

Junior Emily Landherr (Louisville, Ky.) picked up the win. Landherr gave up three runs - two earned - in the five-inning complete-game effort. She allowed six hits, walked one and struck out three.

Sena, Christian, Shuler and freshman Hannah Simpson (Lexington, Ky.) all had two hits each. Simpson had a home run, scored two runs and drove in three. Sena also drove in three, while Martello had two rbis. Shuler scored three runs and Christian scored two.

Centre, now 11-18 overall and 3-7 in the SCAC, will return to action Sunday, April 15 for another doubleheader against Sewanee. Game one is set to start at 12 p.m. CST.
