The Centre College softball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader to Birmingham Southern College Friday, April 6 in Birmingham, Ala.
The Colonels lost 4-1 in game one and 5-0 in game two to fall to 8-15 overall and 1-5 in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC), while the Panthers improved to 21-5 overall and 9-2 in league play.
After three scoreless innings, Birmingham Southern scored a pair of runs in the fourth and then again in the fifth to take a 4-0 lead.
The Colonels scored their only run of the game in the sixth. Freshman Hannah Simpson (Lexington, Ky.) and sophomore Katie Martello (Nicholasville, Ky.) led off the inning with a pair of singles. With one out, junior Emily Meador (Scottsville, Ky.) doubled to right field to score Simpson, but Centre was unable to score again.
Meador took the loss after allowing four runs on seven hits over six innings of work. She walked two and struck out two. Simpson, Martello and freshman Molly Ely (Riverside, Ill.) finished with two hits apiece in the defeat.
The Colonels were unable to get anything going offensively in the second game. The team managed only five hits with sophomore Ashley Christian (Kingsport, Tenn.) accounting for two hits in her four at bats, including a triple.
Birmingham Southern scored a run in the first, three in the fifth and one in the sixth for its five runs.
Freshman pitcher Shawnee Shuler (Knoxville, Tenn.) suffered the loss. Shuler allowed four runs - two earned - on six hits over 4.2 innings. She walked seven and struck out five.
Centre and Birmingham Southern will play another doubleheader Saturday, April 7. The first game is set to start at 11 a.m. CST in Birmingham, Ala.
