Having dropped both ends of a doubleheader Friday, the Centre College softball team lost both games to Birmingham Southern College Saturday, April 7 in Birmingham, Ala.
The Colonels fell behind 5-0 in the first game en-route to a 7-2 defeat in game one. Freshman Shawnee Shuler (Knoxville, Tenn.) drove in two runs with a single in the third to cut the lead to 5-2, but the Panthers scored two in the bottom of the fourth for the final 7-2 tally.
Junior Emily Meador (Scottsville, Tenn.) was the losing pitcher. Meador allowed five runs - four earned - on nine hits in 2.1 innings with a pair of strikeouts.
Centre managed only four hits in the game by four different players.
The Colonels' offense struggled again in the final game of the series as Centre registered only five hits and did not score a run in a 6-0 loss.
Freshman Hannah Simpson (Lexington, Ky.) went 2 for 3 to finish as the only Colonel with multiple hits. Shuler fell to 1-6 on the year after allowing six runs - four earned - on nine hits in six innings. She walked five and struck out five.
Centre, now 8-17 overall and 1-7 in the SCAC, will step out of conference play to host Spalding University in a doubleheader Wednesday, April 11. First pitch of game one is set for 5:30 p.m. at Millennium Park in Danville, Ky.
