Softball takes two from Franklin

The Centre softball team swept Franklin in a doubleheader on Saturday, winning 6-2 in the first game and pulling out a 5-4 win on a walk-off single by Hannah Simpson (Lexington, Ky.) in the second game.

In the first game, the Colonels did most of their damage in the first inning when they put up three runs behind a run-scoring double by Regina Sena (Moss Beach, Calif.) and RBI singles by Simpson and Emily Meador (Scottsville, Ky.).

Franklin got on the board with a home run in the top of the second, but Centre answered in the bottom half of the inning when Sena singled home Ashley Christian (Kingsport, Tenn.). Franklin added one more run in the top of the third inning, but Centre responded with two this time when Meador doubled and Molly Ely (Riverside, Ill.) was hit by a pitch, both coming home on a double by Shawnee Shuler (Knoxville, Tenn.).

Neither team would score after Centre went up 6-2 in the third inning. From that point, Meador settled in on the mound for the Colonels, allowing just a single in the fourth and facing the minimum over the final three innings.

In the second game, Franklin scored one run in the first inning, and Centre went hitless until the third inning when Stephanie Preston (Nicholasville, Ky.) led off with a single and later scored when Chelsea Collard (Louisville, Ky.) dropped a single into short right field. The Colonels went on to add another three runs in the fourth inning on doubles by Emily Landherr (Louisville, Ky.) and Christian.

With Centre holding onto a 4-1 lead, Franklin battled back with two runs in the fifth, and with two outs in the seventh inning, tied the game on back-to-back doubles. However, the Colonels were able to answer in the bottom of the seventh when Christian legged out an infield single and advanced to third on a double by Sena. After Meador walked to load the bases, Simpson slapped a single into left field for the victory.

The pair of victories brings Centre's record on the year to 5-8 while Franklin falls to 2-2. The Colonels are back in action Sunday with a doubleheader against Hanover.
