Colonels have a challenging day at the SCAC Softball Tournament
The Colonels had to face three conference teams on Saturday, April 23 in Greencastle, Ind., as part of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Softball Championships. Centre first faced DePauw and fell 9-0, before pulling off a win over Rhodes by a score of 4-0. In the third game the Colonels lost to Southwestern by a score of 11-5. The Colonels entered the tournament as the #3 seed in the East.
During the Colonels game against the #1 seed in the East, DePauw, Centre struggled to get their offense going, as they picked up only three hits in the game.
The Tigers took the 2-0 lead following the bottom of the first inning. Brianne Weeks and Rachel MacBeth scored on a double by Jen Kosinski.
In the top of the second inning freshman Katie Martello (Nicholasville, Ky.) singled to right field, but the Colonels were unable to post any more hits in the inning.
DePauw recorded three more runs in the second inning to take the 5-0 lead.
Junior Regina Sena (Moss Beach, Calif.) earned the second hit of the game for Centre in the third inning when she doubled down the left field line.
The Colonels had their most productive offensive inning in the fourth. Sophomore Chelsea Benham (Taswell, Ind.) made it to first base on a single. Martello was then walked. Later in the inning sophomore Emily Meador (Scottsville, Ky.) reached first on a fielder's choice, but DePauw was able to end the inning by getting Benham out at third.
DePauw built a 9-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning when MacBeth advanced home on an error by Centre and Amy Hallett hit a home run which also scored Haley Buchanan, as well as Jen Kosinski.
Centre was unable to score in the fifth inning and DePauw took the game by a final score of 9-0.
Sophomore Emily Landherr (Louisville, Ky.) took the loss for Centre on the mound, following two innings pitched, in which she allowed seven hits, five runs, and one walk, while striking out one in 14 batters faced.
Sophomore Mary Saylor (Brodhead, Ky.) recorded four put-outs in the game. Benham and sophomore Chelsea Collard (Louisville, Ky.) each had two assists.
The Colonels then faced the #2 seed in the East, Rhodes College, and Centre got off to a great start.
In the top of the first inning, the first three batters for Rhodes got out. Centre then went on to score three runs in the bottom of the inning to take the 3-0 lead. Sena hit a home run, which also scored freshman Ashley Christian (Kingsport, Tenn.). Senior Taylor Childress (Nashville, Tenn.) advanced home later in the inning on an illegal pitch.
Centre then didn't allow a hit in the top of the second inning, while they were able to pick up one more run to take the 4-0 advantage. Christian singled up the middle to score Meador.
Rhodes was able to record four hits in the remaining five innings, but they were unable to convert any of those to runs and Centre went on to take the game, 4-0.
Meador earned the win on the mound for the Colonels, as she pitched all seven innings, allowing four hits and walking one batter in 28 batters faced. She also walked three during the win.
Christian finished the game with two hits, one RBI, and one run in three at bats.
Martello posted nine put-outs and Benham had three assists.
Courtney Williams provided Rhodes with six put-outs and Olivia Ryan had two assists.
Centre then took on the #1 seed from the West, Southwestern, and the Pirates built a 6-0 lead following the first inning of play.
The Colonels were able to hold Southwestern scoreless during the next three innings, but they were unable to get any runs on the board themselves.
During the fifth inning the Pirates added one run to their score to take the 7-0 lead and then they made it a 9-0 game in the top of the sixth.
Centre was able to make a run at the Pirates in the bottom of the sixth, as they scored three runs to put the score at 9-3. Childress doubled to right center field to score Christian. Childress would score on the ensuing play, as their was an error by the Pirates, while Benham was at bat. Benham scored the final run of the inning on a single by Martello.
Southwestern went ahead 11-3 following the top of the seventh inning.
The Colonels tried to rally in the bottom of the inning. Sena hit a single to left field, which allowed Christian and sophomore Nicole Webb (Prospect, Ky.) to advance home to make it an 11-5 game with one out. Centre was unable to score any additional runs and Southwestern took the game 11-5.
Meador took the loss for the Colonels on the mound. She pitched 2.1 innings, allowing six hits, six runs, and walked two in 16 batters faced.
Martello finished the game with two hits and one RBI in three at bats, while Christian had two hits and two runs in four at bats. Martello posted five put-outs and Saylor, as well as Collard each had three assists.
Kayla Irvin had three hits, five RBI's, and two runs in five at bats for Southwestern. Haley Hughes had nine put-outs and Amanda Ambrose had five assists in the game.
Centre finished the season with an overall record of 17-23.
