Colonels finish fourth at Cumberlands

The Centre men's track and field team competed in the University of the Cumberlands Track and Field Invitational this Saturday and, despite not competing with a full roster, still managed to finish fourth out of 14 teams at the event. Top eight finishers scored points at this meet.

The Colonels were able to put together a strong meet in the throwing events. Junior Alex Calhoun (Oxford, Ohio) took first place in the javelin with a throw of 51.31 meters, the only event victory for Centre at the meet. Senior Jacob Carter (Bardstown, Ky.) finished right behind Calhoun with a throw of 50.06. Carter also scored points in the other two throwing events, taking seventh place in the discus and eighth in the shot put. Junior Michael Bozarth (Mount Washington, Ky.) finished sixth in the discus with a throw of 37.18.

Senior Graham Campbell (Cincinnati, Ohio) scored for the Colonels in two events. He took third place in the 800m with a time of 1:57.50 and fifth in the 1500m with a time of 4:04.66. Campbell was joined in the 800m by freshman Jesse Thompson (Lexington, Ky.), who posted a time of 2:00.56. Campbell was also part of the 4x400 relay team also featuring sophomores Cesar Hernandez (Chelsea, Mass.) and Nick Niehaus (Cincinnati, Ohio) and freshman Matt McCurdy (Bartlett, Tenn.), who finished seventh with a time of 3:41.05.

Centre placed four runners in long distance events.  In the 3000m steeplechase, Matt McCurdy finished third with a time of 10:32.46. Freshman John Burke (Louisville, Ky.) finished in fourth place with a time of 10:33.27. Freshman Eric Beyerle took fifth place in the 5K with a time of 16:13.77, while freshman Josh Rieskamp (Cincinnati, Ohio) finished in sixth place in the 10K with a time of 33:30.71.

Rounding out the scoring for the Colonels, senior Marcus Niemann (Louisville, Ky.) took sixth in the 400m with a time of 53.22. Nick Niehaus finished sixth in the high jump with a distance of 1.75 meters. Finally, sophomore Michael Orr (Murray, Ky.) cleared a distance of 12-06.00 to finish third in the pole vault.

The next meet for the Centre men's track and field team will be on April 20. They will be competing in the EKU Twilight in Richmond, Ky.
