Men's soccer falls 4-1 to No. 12 Ohio Northern

The Centre men's soccer team took an early lead but was unable to hold on, eventually falling by the score of 4-1 to No. 12 Ohio Northern in the Herb Lauffer Memorial Tournament on Sunday in Erie, Pa.

Centre got on the board just three minutes into the game when Jack Goblirsch (Elizabethtown, Ky.) scored on a ball from from Jeremy Carlson (Seattle, Wash.). Unfortunately for the Colonels, that proved to be the highlight as Ohio Northern came back with four unanswered goals to pull away.

Northern's Keegan Ross and Cameron Johnson each scored twice in the game, with Ross tying the game in the 22nd minute and Johnson giving Northern the lead just before halftime. Each of the players also added a goal in the second half with Johnson scoring in the 66th minute and Ross in the 72nd.

"We are struggling with this scoreline because it does not reflect our quality as a team," said Centre head coach Jeb Burch. "We feel our defense is one of our strengths, but we bumbled around today and gave up three poor goals through a lack of organization and communication."

Ohio Northern outshot Centre 15-9 and put eight of those on goal to the Colonels' three. Zach Sosnovich (Woodbridge, N.J.) made four saves in goal for the Colonels while Mac Church had two stops for Ohio Northern.

The loss drops Centre to 1-1 on the season while Ohio Northern improves to 2-0.

"Today's game will hopefully serve as a good teaching moment for our guys so when an opportunity like this comes around again, we are better prepared to take advantage of the moment," Burch added.

Centre returns home to host the 23rd Annual Bob Allen Nissan Classic on Friday and Saturday. In Friday's games, Spalding, coached by former Centre assistant Adam Boyer, will take on Emory at 5:30 p.m. followed by Centre facing Covenant at 8 p.m. On Saturday, Spalding and Covenant will meet at 4 p.m. with Centre taking on Emory at 6 p.m.
