Centre men open with overtime win over PSU-Behrend
The Centre men's soccer team opened its 2012 campaign with a 2-1 overtime victory over Penn State-Behrend in the Herb Lauffer Memorial Tournament on Saturday in Erie, Pa.
Ryan Garvey (Louisville, Ky.) scored both goals for the Colonels, leveling the game at 1-1 off an assist from Austin Greer (Bowling Green, Ky.), then getting an assist from Jack Goblirsch (Elizabethtown, Ky.) on the game winner in the first minute of overtime.
"I am really happy to see Garvey's game," said Centre head coach Jeb Burch. "We need him to score goals this year if we are going to mount any kind of a serious run. I know today's game will give him confidence."
The game was scoreless through the first half before PSU-Behrend got on the board in the 57th minute on a goal by Eric Hackworth. The lead would be short lived, however, as Garvey and Centre answered just over four minutes later.
The Colonels outshot PSU-Behrend 16-11 for the game including an 11-5 advantage in the second half. Centre was able to create chances and had some close calls late in the game, but it ultimately went to overtime before the Colonels claimed the win.
"I was concerned with how we went down 0-1 today on a set piece," Burch added. "But credit to our guys, we got the game back to 1-1 within five minutes. We were a bit unlucky not to find the winner late in the game, but credit to PSU-Behrend for defending, and their keeper made two big saves."
Centre goalkeeper Zach Sosnovich made four saves in the victory while PSU-Behrend's Jarrod Wassell had six stops in the loss.
Centre will now take on Ohio Northern on Sunday at 11 a.m. Ohio Northern was a 4-0 winner over Geneseo State in Saturday's second game.
"We have a tall order in store tomorrow that will test our resolve to be a top team in the Great lakes Region," Burch finished. "It'll take a team effort, and our better players need to stand up and get it done."
