The Centre men's lacrosse team pulled away in the third quarter to defeat Hendrix 15-9 in a Southern Athletic Association game on Friday in Danville, Ky.
Ten Colonels scored in all with Mitchell Kraus (Louisville, Ky.), Joey Lencewicz (Gates Mills, Ohio), Matt Hughes (Vero Beach, Fla.), Wesley Hardman (Narragansett, R.I.), Corey Krill (Louisville, Ky.), Conor Bennett (Alpharetta, Ga.), Austin Zehnder (Prospect, Ky.) and Sumner Franklin (Louisville, Ky.) all scoring single goals. Patrick Rogers, Cameron Millstone and Robbie Borrello accounted for all of the Warriors' scoring with three goals each.
The Warriors, who entered Friday's contest in a 3-way tie for third place behind the Colonels in the SAA standings, were able to stay close for most of the first half. Hendrix scored the first goal to take its only lead, but it would be the Warriors' only lead of the game after Centre answered with the next two scores.
The teams traded goals until Centre scored two straight, only to see Hendrix come back with two of its own to tie the score at 5-5 with 9:42 left in the first half. It was from that point when Centre took control, going ahead to stay on a Hardman goal at the 2:55 mark, then scoring again just eight seconds later when Krill won the faceoff and assisted Stubbs on a goal for a 7-5 lead.
The Colonels took that lead to halftime, then pulled away by outscoring Hendrix 5-1 in the third quarter. Centre tied its biggest lead when Hughes scored the first goal of the fourth quarter, and the teams traded scores over the closing minutes.
Bryce McCoy saved 10 of the 19 shots he faced for a .526 save percentage, while Christian Wheeler had 19 saves for Hendrix.
Centre outshot Hendrix 63-33 in the game, and committed just 14 turnovers to the Warriors' 31. The Colonels also held a 36-34 edge in ground balls.
With the win, Centre improves to 9-3 overall and 5-1 in SAA competition and clinches the No. 2 seed in the SAA Tournament while Hendrix falls to 7-8 overall and 3-3 in the conference. The Colonels wrap up regular season play when they host Rhodes for senior day at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
