Men's lacrosse falls 12-10 to Carthage in season opener

The Centre men's lacrosse team came back from a four-goal second half deficit, but eventually fell to Carthage College 12-10 in the team's season opener Sunday in Danville, Ky.

The loss was the first the Colonels had suffered at home since April 17, 2011, snapping a 15-game winning streak at Farris Stadium. Carthage, which was the runner-up in the Midwest Lacrosse Conference last season, improves to 2-1 on the season with the victory.

Zack Connors (Louisville, Ky.) led the way for Centre offensively with three goals and two assists. Matt Hughes (Vero Beach, Fla.) scored two goals, while Mitchell Kraus (Louisville, Ky.), Connor Stubbs (Decatur, Ga.), Phillip Malloy (Louisville, Ky.), Peter Murphy (Louisville, Ky.) and Sumner Franklin (Louisville, Ky.) each found the net once. Murphy had a team high three assists in the game.

The Colonels found themselves in an early 2-0 hole and would spend the rest of the game catching up. Though they tied the score on three separate occasions, the Colonels were never able to break through and take the lead.

After falling behind, consecutive goals by Kraus and Malloy helped tie the score at 2-2 early in the second quarter. However, Carthage was able to score four of the next five goals, three of them coming from Tanner Thomas, who had a game-high four goals, to take a 6-3 lead to halftime.

Murphy scored a man-up goal just after the start of the second half to cut the margin to 6-4, but Carthage scored three of the next four goals to pull back ahead 9-5. It was then when the Colonels mounted their comeback, with Hughes scoring consecutive goals to start a run of four straight that tied score at 9-9 with 12:54 to play.

Carthage pulled back ahead on a Timothy Francis goal, but Connors was able to answer with a man-down goal to tie the score at 10 with 9:45 to play. Unfortunately for the Colonels, Carthage would add two more goals and keep them off the scoreboard the rest of the way to claim the victory.

Centre took 39 shots to Carthage's 33 in the game and held a 37-27 edge in ground balls. Bryce McCoy (Hudson, Ohio) made 12 saves in goal for Centre while Carthage's Ryan Smith had 15 stops.

The Colonels are back in action on Saturday when they travel to take on Hanover.
