Centre field hockey falls in overtime at Rhodes

The Centre field hockey team took an early lead but was unable to hold on, eventually falling 3-2 in overtime at Rhodes on Saturday in Memphis, Tenn.

The Colonels got started quickly against the defending conference champions, taking an early lead on a goal by Courtney Kuiper (Louisville, Ky.) just nine minutes into the game. Shortly afterward, the Colonels were up 2-0 on a goal by Erin Bacon (Williamsburg, Va.).

Unfortunately, those were the only goals Centre would manage on the day. Rhodes came back with a goal by Evy Royther with 14 minutes remaining in the game, then tied the score three minutes later on an Alex Friedman goal. Kat Simpson of Rhodes scored the decisive goal in overtime to hand the Colonels the loss.

Rhodes took 14 shots in the game to Centre's nine and held a 7-5 edge in penalty corners. Colonels goalkeeper Kathryn Higgins (Kildare, Ireland) made six saves while Jordan Robinson had four stops for Rhodes.

With the loss, Centre drops to 4-5 overall with a 2-3 record in Southern Athletic Association play. Rhodes improves to 6-3 on the season and stays perfect in SAA competition at 5-0. The Colonels continue their weekend road trip when they travel to Hendrix on Sunday.
