Field hockey opens SAA competition with 4-1 win at Sewanee

The Centre field hockey team picked up its first victory of the season in its Southern Athletic Association debut, defeating Sewanee 4-1 on Saturday in Sewanee, Tenn.

Alexis Hebert (Chapel Hill, N.C.) scored two goals to lead Centre while Courtney Kuiper (Louisville, Ky.) added a goal and an assist.

It was Kuiper who got the scoring started for the Colonels, finding the back of the cage off an assist from Chelsea Klein (Louisville, Ky.) just seven minutes into the game. Though Sewanee's Tilden Davis knotted the score at 1-1 just a minute later, the Centre defense would hold the Tigers scoreless the rest of the way.

Erin Bacon (Williamsburg, Va.) scored on an assist from Kuiper to put the Colonels in front for good and take a 2-1 lead to halftime. Hebert scored both of her goals in the second half to help Centre pull away for the eventual 4-1 victory.

Centre took 35 shots in the game compared with 14 for Sewanee. Sewanee's Ellie Barton made 10 saves while Centre goalkeeper Kathryn Higgins (Kildare, Ireland) had four stops.

With the win, Centre moves to 1-2 on the season with a 1-0 record in SAA competition. Sewanee falls to 2-1 with a 0-1 mark in the conference.

The Colonels return home to take on Rhodes on Saturday at noon, followed by Hendrix on Sunday at 11 a.m.
