Field hockey team falls 4-3 to Johns Hopkins in overtime

After scoring with eight seconds left in regulation to force overtime, Johns Hopkins scored 11:58 into the extra period to defeat the Centre College field hockey team 4-3 in the season opener for both teams Saturday, Sept. 1 in Danville, Ky.

Alexa Lantiere scored the lone goal of the first half off an assist from Storm Kodde 11:23 into the opening period for to give Johns Hopkins a 1-0 lead.

Junior Courtney Kuiper (Louisville, Ky.) scored the Colonels' first goal of the season 1:22 into the second half to tie the game at one apiece. Junior Alexis Hebert (Chapel Hill, N.C.) had the assist.

Just over 10 minutes later, senior Barbara Parks (Chapel Hill, N.C.) gave Centre its first lead of the season with a goal off an assist from senior Sydney White (Louisville, Ky.). 

Kodde, with an assist from Leslie MacManus, scored at the 55:51 to tie the match at 2-2, but Hebert gave the Colonels a 3-2 lead with just under five minutes to play. Kuiper had the assist.

With time expiring, Kodde scored her second goal of the day with only eight seconds on the clock to send the match to overtime. Liane Tellier assisted on the goal.

Centre out-shot Johns Hopkins 8-2 in the extra period, but Lantiere hit the back of the cage at the 81:58 mark to give the Blue Jays the 4-3 win.

Overall, the Colonels out-shot Johns Hopkins 22-20, while the Blue Jays had a 15-11 edge in penalty corners. 

Senior CeCe Lindsey (Louisville, Ky.) took the loss in goal for Centre. Lindsey made eight saves in the defeat.

The Colonels will be back in action Sunday, Sept. 2 when they host Christopher Newport University. Start time is set for 10:30 a.m. in Danville, Ky.
