Centre falls 2-1, wins 13-2 over Oglethorpe

The Centre College baseball team split an SCAC doubleheader with Oglethorpe University falling 2-1 in game one and then winning 13-2 in game two Saturday, April 21 in Danville, Ky.

With the split, the Colonels move to 14-23 overall and 4-9 in the SCAC, while Oglethorpe is now 11-26 overall and 3-11 in league play.

After recording the first two outs in the top of te third, Centre allowed two runs - one earned - in the third inning to fall behind 2-0.

The score stayed that way until the bottom of the sixth. Junior Danny Freudiger (Cincinnati, Ohio) drew a one-out walk and then moved to third on a double by sophomore Cody Nelson (Joelton, Tenn.). Senior Cameron Fishman (Northridge, Calif.) scored Freudiger with a sacrifice fly, but the Colonels were unable to score again and fell 2-1 in the series' opener.

Sophomore pitcher Kyle DeLong (Lawrenceburg, Ky.) was saddled with the loss. DeLong allowed only one earned run over seven innings on eight hits with one walk and five strikeouts. The complete game effort was the first of his career.

Nelson and sophomore Charlie Holland (Knoxville, Tenn.) finished with two hits apiece in the defeat.

The Colonels wasted little time bouncing back in game two as they scored four runs in the first inning and then nine more in the second en-route to a 13-2 run-rule victory.

Centre used 13 hits, seven walks and six Oglethorpe errors to break the game open early and go on for the 11-run win.

Freudiger and Nelson had three hits each. Freudiger also scored three times and drove in three runs, while Nelson scored two and drove in two. Fishman and junior Jason Osterman (Monroe, Ohio) had two hits apiece with Osterman scoring two and driving in three.

Holland scored a pair of runs and sophomore Kyle Cook (Maineville, Ohio) drove in two as well.

Sophomore pitcher Kyle Neu (Cincinnati, Ohio) evened his record at 4-4 on the season with the win. He went six innings and scattered 12 hits with one walk and two strikeouts.

The two teams will play the rubber game of the series Sunday, April 22. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. at Gary Wright Field
