Baseball drops both ends of doubleheader to No. 22 Birmingham Southern

The Centre College baseball team was swept in a doubleheader by No. 22 Birmingham Southern College Friday, April 6 in Birmingham, Ala.

With the losses, Centre dropped to 11-18 overall and 1- 6 in the SCAC, while the Panthers improved to 22-6 overall and 7-0 in league action.

The Colonels jumped out to a good start scoring two runs in the first inning on four hits. Sophomore infielder Charlie Holland (Knoxville, Tenn.) drove in the first run with a single and junior Jason Osterman (Monroe, Ohio) drove in the second run on a ground for a 2-0 lead.

Birmingham Southern answered with a run in the bottom of the first and trailed 2-1 until the fourth when the Panthers scored twice to take a 3-2 lead.

Centre allowed four runs in the fifth and four more in the sixth for the final 11-2 tally.

Junior pitcher Tommy Munoz (Fort Myers, Fla.) was the losing pitcher after allowing five runs on six hits in one inning.

The Colonels fell behind 2-0 after two innings in game two but senior catcher Cameron Fishman (Northridge, Calif.) scored junior Danny Freudiger (Cincinnati, Ohio) in the third to cut the lead in half.

Two more runs in the fifth gave the Panthers a 4-1 lead, but a run in the sixth and another in the seventh by Centre cut the lead to 4-3.

The Colonels were unable to score the remainder of the way, while Birmingham Southern added three in the seventh and two in the eighth to pull away for the 9-3 victory.

Sophomore pitcher Kyle DeLong (Lawrenceburg, Ky.) took the loss. DeLong allowed six runs on 11 hits over six innings of work. 

Fishman, Freudiger and sophomore Kyle Cook (Maineville, Ohio) finished with two hits apiece with Fishman driving in two runs.

The two teams will return Saturday, April 7 for the series' finale. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. CST in Birmingham, Ala.
