Baseball splits twinbill with Maryville
One day after splitting a doubleheader on the road against Hanover, the Centre College baseball team split another doubleheader, this time against Maryville College Sunday, March 11 at Gary Wright Field in Danville, Ky.
The Colonels earned an 8-5 win in game one as senior pitcher Ben Lause (Mason, Ohio) picked up his second win of the season.
Maryville scored a run in the first and Centre answered with a run in the bottom of the inning for a 1-1 tie. With two outs in the bottom of the second, the Colonels plated four runs. The big blow came off the bat of sophomore outfielder Cody Nelson (Joelton, Tenn.), who hit a two-run home run to right center field to cap the inning.
The Scots answered with a three-run inning in the third off Lause, but were held scoreless the next two innings.
Junior outfielder Danny Freudiger (Cincinnati, Ohio) hit his second home run of the season in the bottom of the fourth over the right field fence to extend the lead to 6-4.
Maryville cut the lead to 6-5 in the sixth when the Scots scored on a passed ball, but Centre added two runs in the sixth when Nelson scored freshman Phil Brilli (Powell, Ohio) on a sacrifice fly, and Freudiger drove in junior Aaron Ammann (Winnetka, Calif.) with a single.
Senior pitcher Brian Bascom (Cincinnati, Ohio) tossed the final inning and a third to pick up his second save of the season and secure the team's eighth win of the year.
Lause went 4.2 innings and allowed four runs - three earned - on three hits. He walked four and struck out five.
Freudiger and senior Cameron Fishman (Northridge, Calif.) finished with two hits each, while Nelson had three hits in three at-bats with three runs driven in. Freudiger also scored three runs, and Fishman drove in two.
The Colonels jumped out to a 10-2 lead in game two but allowed 11 unanswered runs, including five in the top of the seventh to fall 13-10.
With the help of five Maryville walks, Centre scored seven times in the second. Senior Jordan Ellis (Crestwood, Ky.) had a bases-loaded two-run double in the inning and Nelson drove in another with a single.
Nelson also had a two-run single in the third, but the Colonels were unable to score the remainder of the way.
Brilli suffered the loss after allowing five runs on five hits in 1.2 innings of work. Nelson finished with two hits and three runs driven in. Ellis was two for three with two rbi. Ammann had three hits in four at-bats with two runs scored, and Freudiger scored two runs and drove in two in the loss.
Centre, now 8-7 overall, will next host No. 19 Thomas More Wednesday, March 14 at Gary Wright Field in Danville, Ky. First pitch is set for 5:30 p.m.
