Baseball completes three-game sweep of Sewanee with 10-7 win

The Colonels improve to 13-18 overall and even their Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) record at 6-6, while Sewanee falls to 10-17 overall and 0-8 in the league.

Both teams went scoreless the first two innings, but the Tigers got on the scoreboard in a big way with five runs on five hits in the third inning.

Sewanee added another in the top of the fourth to make it 6-0, but the Colonels came roaring back in the bottom of the inning. Freshman outfielder Cody Nelson (Joelton, Tenn.) hit the right field foul pole with one on for a two-run home run to cut the lead to 6-2.

Centre then loaded the bases and with two outs, sophomore outfielder Danny Freudiger (Mason, Ohio) cleared the bases with a grand slam to right field to tie the game at 6-6.

Freshman third baseman Charlie Holland (Knoxville, Tenn.) delivered a run-scoring single in the fifth to give Centre the lead and junior catcher Cameron Fishman (Northridge, Calif.) and senior second baseman Cory Crowdis (Louisville, Ky.) extended the lead to 9-7 with a sacrifice fly and another run-scoring single.

Sewanee threatened in the seventh with a lead-off double and an RBI single to make it 9-7. A wild pitch advance the runner to second base with nobody out but freshman pitcher Kyle DeLong (Lawrenceburg, Ky.) struck out the next two hitters and got a fly out to end the inning.

The Tigers recorded the first two outs in the bottom of the seventh, but Freudiger delivered again, hitting his second home run of the day to right field to give Centre a 10-7 lead.

Senior pitcher Andy Hagerman (Lexington, Ky.) did the rest tossing two scoreless innings for his first career save.

DeLong earned his second win of the season going three innings and allowing only one run on two hits with four strikeouts.

Freudiger finished the day four for four with three runs scored and five RBi. Along with his two home runs, his first two of the season, he also added a double and a walk to finish a triple shy of the cycle.

Senior first baseman Steven Proctor (Springfield, Ky.) Crowdis, Nelson and Holland all had multi-hit games for Centre. Holland went three for five. Proctor went two for five and Nelson and Crowdis both went 2-4 on the day.

Centre will next travel to Pippa Passes, Ky. to play Alice Lloyd College in a non-conference doubleheader. First pitch of game one is set for 2 p.m.
