Team Black opens Cols' World Series with 7-1 win
Entering the series having won the last three years, Team Black opened the 6th Annual Cols' World Series with a 7-1 win over Team Gold to take a 1-0 lead in the best of five series Saturday, Sept. 25 at Gary Wright Field in Danville, Ky.
Following a pair of scoreless innings by both teams, Team Black broke through with three runs in the top of the third. Freshman outfielder Sean Cole (Teaneck, N.J.) drove in the first run of the series with a sacrifice fly to center field. Senior infielder Cory Crowdis (Louisville, Ky.) drove in the second run with a double to right-center field and freshman infielder Charlie Holland (Knoxville, Tenn.) drove in the third run with a single for the 3-0 advantage.
Fishman drove in his second run of the game and fourth for Team Black on a
single in the fourth inning to put Team Black ahead 4-0.
Team Gold scored its lone run of the game in the bottom of the fourth. With the bases loaded, sophomore infielder Aaron Ammann (Winnetka, Calif.) grounded out with the bases loaded to cut the lead to 4-1.
Senior catcher Cameron Fishman (Northridge, Calif.) drove in a pair of runs in the sixth inning with his second hit of the day and sophomore first baseman Zeke Edwards (Harrodsburg, Ky.) had a run-scoring ground-out in the seventh for the final 7-1 tally.
Senior Matt Waldman (Lexington, Ky.) earned the win in relief for Team Black. Waldman threw 2.2 innings of scoreless baseball and did not allow a hit while striking out two.
Senior Andy Hagerman (Lexington, Ky.) took the loss for Team Black allowing three runs, all earned, on four hits in three innings.
Fishman was the only player from either team to finish with multiple hits. The junior backstop went 2 for 2 with a run scored and three driven in. Sophomore Matt Freire (Frankfort, Ky.) had a hit in three at-bats and scored two runs.
The two teams will return to action Sunday, Sept. 26 for game two of the series. Junior Ben Lause (Mason, Ohio) is scheduled to start for Team Gold and he will be opposed by sophomore Tommy Munoz (Owens Cross Roads, Ala.). First pitch is set for 12:25 p.m. at Gary Wright Field in Danville, Ky.
